THE GENIUS OF GRAPHITE: COPYING MENZEL
THE GENIUS OF GRAPHITE: COPYING MENZEL
A SELF-PACED ONLINE COURSE
PURPOSE OF THE COURSE:
Having been transfixed by the drawings of Adolph Friedrich Erdmann von Menzel (1815-1905), which reflect a masterful vision paired with a brilliant technique in graphite, this drawing course explores his work more deeply through the studious and time-honored procedure of copying drawings. Students focus on faithfully representing the way that Menzel handled hatch marks, his composition & tonal development, and the use of the paper - including Menzel’s clever mobilization of the stump. All skill levels are welcome.
Beginning with a lecture/demonstration, Menzel copying is both demonstrated and explained. Students receive unlimited access to the recordings (for personal use) of all sessions. Registrants are challenged by a selection of higher resolution Menzel images, and encouraged to execute their copies alongside the instructor during the virtual course. Students should emerge from “The Genius of Graphite” with more finely tuned organizational concepts within graphite drawing, including how the use of layered and varied marks can create more convincing expressions of volume. This 8-hour course has been meticulously designed, in a self-paced fashion, to provide students with sufficient time to develop and contemplate their drawing exercises.
